Surprisingly (i thought) the most expensive instrument is actually a unique violin made by one of the most prestigous violin makers in the world, Stradivarius. Of the 1100 recorded that was made, only 650 have survived. The "Lady Tennant" violin made in 1699 is the most covetted, well known, and expensive. A Stativari would sell at about $2.03million each.
In number form that is $2 030 000.

The most expensive electric guitar would be as of 2006 (i think) apparently surpassed Eric Clapton's famous guitar "Blackie" at $950 000 USD. The guitar above however was sold during a charity event and was signed by loads of famous guitarists including Clapton himself. The signatures included were:
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Brian May, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Pete Townsend, Mark Knopfler, Ray Davis, Liam Gallagher, Ronnie Wood, Tony Iommi, Angus & Malcolm Young, Paul McCartney, Sting, Ritchie Blackmore, Def Leppard, and Bryan Adams, the coordinator of the project.
This guitar was sold for a whopping $1 mill by the Quatar's royal family. It was then donated back and sold for $2.7 mill. Collecting together $3.7 mill.
$3 700 000 !!!!!
id buy it for 10 mill. And no Eddie Van Halen... WHAT
